EU Commission proposes data protection reform

The EU Commission has today published its proposals for a new data protection legislative package to replace the current regime. The package includes:

  • a Regulation containing key requirements and safeguards on the use of personal data, which will have direct application across each Member State (including the UK); and
  • a Directive relating specifically to the use of personal data by the police and judicial authorities in criminal matters, to be implemented separately in each Member State.
