The UK Government today published proposed legislation which would require the retention of certain data by communications service providers, and allow access to such data by appropriate authorities for crime detection and prevention. The proposals have sparked a lot of recent debate about intrusion on privacy and the cost of data retention. However, laws relating to retention of and access to communications data already exist; the new proposals aim to update these. More news here once I have read the proposals in more detail…
